What should you know about kidney pain during ovulation?

Ovulation pain is often felt on one side of the lower abdomen and can sometimes spread toward the back or flank. It may occur around the middle of a cycle and settle without treatment. The kidneys sit higher in the back, beneath the lower ribs, so pain in that area can also reflect a urinary infection, a stone, muscle strain, or another abdominal problem.

Rest, gentle heat, fluids, and a suitable over-the-counter pain medicine may help if you can take it safely. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay assessment because the pain appears mid-cycle.

Arrange a clinical review if the pain is new, recurrent, worsening, or interfering with daily life. A clinician may consider an abdominal and pelvic examination, urine testing, pregnancy testing, or an ultrasound based on your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden flank or pelvic pain, fever, repeated vomiting, faintness, blood in the urine, inability to urinate, heavy vaginal bleeding, or pain during a possible pregnancy. These features need prompt assessment rather than cycle tracking alone.

Ask whether the pain location fits ovulation, whether urine or pregnancy testing is needed, what symptoms suggest a cyst or endometriosis, and when imaging would be appropriate.
