What should you know about Keytruda and lung cancer?

Pembrolizumab helps the immune system attack some cancer cells. It is not suitable for every lung cancer. The decision can depend on the cancer type, stage, biomarker results, symptoms, previous treatment, and general health. Genomic tumour profiling may identify changes that affect the choice between immunotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted treatment, surgery, or radiotherapy.

Treatment may be given before or after an operation, with chemotherapy, or as part of care for cancer that has spread. If lung cancer reaches the brain, the team may add brain-directed treatment and symptom control. A hoarse voice can have many causes, so it needs assessment rather than being assumed to show cancer.

Ask which lung cancer subtype was diagnosed, what the biomarker report shows, and why pembrolizumab is being recommended. Discuss whether surgery such as a lung lobectomy is possible, whether radiotherapy is needed, and how scans will measure the response. Tell the team about autoimmune illness, lung disease, medicines, and supplements before treatment begins.

Immune treatment can cause inflammation in organs such as the lungs, bowel, liver, skin, thyroid, or other glands. Record new symptoms between visits and use the cancer service's contact route when they appear. Palliative care can support breathlessness, pain, sleep, appetite, and emotional wellbeing alongside active treatment.

Contact the treatment team quickly for new or worsening breathlessness, persistent cough, chest pain, fever, severe diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin, marked weakness, confusion, or a new widespread rash. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing blood, collapse, sudden weakness, or new trouble speaking.
