Short answer

Dark urine during keto often reflects concentrated urine from low fluid intake, but persistent or tea-coloured urine needs medical assessment for other causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clue
Low fluid intake can make urine more concentrated during keto.
Do not ignore
Tea-coloured urine, jaundice, confusion or very little urine.

Possible explanations

When carbohydrate intake falls, the body releases stored water along with stored fuel. If drinks and water-rich foods do not replace that fluid, urine can become darker and stronger smelling. Heat, exercise, vomiting or diarrhoea can deepen this effect.

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Dark urine with yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, marked tiredness, nausea or abdominal pain may point to a liver or bile problem. Some medicines, supplements and foods can also change urine colour. Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are examples of conditions that require medical evaluation, not dietary self-treatment.

What to do now

Drink fluids regularly and use thirst, urine colour and how you feel as prompts, unless a clinician has restricted your fluid intake. Replace fluid lost through sweating or stomach illness according to professional advice. Avoid assuming that darker urine is simply a sign that keto is working.

If the colour does not return toward your usual shade, record when it started, your drinks, supplements and other symptoms, then arrange medical advice. Use the Dark Urine symptom guide as a starting point for what to mention.

When it needs prompt attention

Seek urgent care for very dark brown or tea-coloured urine with yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. These signs can reflect significant dehydration, heat illness or a problem affecting the liver or kidneys.

Get same-day advice if dark urine continues despite normal drinking, or if fever, burning urination, unusual weakness or vomiting accompanies it. Heat Exhaustion and Dehydration can worsen quickly in hot conditions.

Useful questions

Ask whether your urine colour could reflect dehydration, a supplement or medicine, and whether you need urine or blood tests. Mention recent heat exposure, exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, alcohol, new medicines and any yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Questions people ask

Is dark urine proof that I am dehydrated?

No. Concentrated urine is one possibility, but persistent or unusual colour has other causes and may need testing.

Should I stop keto if my urine is dark?

Pause restrictive changes while you seek advice if the colour persists or you have other symptoms; do not delay urgent care for warning signs.
