Keloid at a Wound: What to Know

How the structures involved in Keloid Scars differ from normal

Short answer

A keloid at a wound is an overgrown scar that extends beyond the original injury as the skin heals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Scar growth after injury

Wounds trigger collagen production to repair damaged skin. In a keloid, this repair response remains excessive after the surface has closed, creating a raised, firm area that may continue growing into surrounding skin. It can itch, feel tender, or become sore when clothing or movement rubs it. A keloid may follow a cut, burn, operation, piercing, or acne injury. A healing wound that is still open, hot, draining, or increasingly painful is not explained by scar tissue alone and needs a different assessment.

Caring for the area

Follow the wound-care instructions given for the original injury and avoid picking scabs or repeatedly stretching the site. Once the wound has closed, a clinician may discuss scar support such as pressure care or silicone-based measures, depending on the location. For an established keloid, options can include steroid injections, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or removal surgery, sometimes in combination. The plan should account for wound maturity, infection risk, skin tone, symptoms, and whether the scar has returned after earlier treatment. Do not reopen or shave the area yourself.

Warning signs

Contact a clinician promptly if the wound separates, produces pus, develops spreading redness or warmth, smells unusual, or causes fever or worsening pain. Seek review for a scar that grows quickly, bleeds without clear rubbing, ulcerates, or restricts a joint or body opening. Early assessment helps separate infection or delayed healing from a mature keloid.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether the wound is fully closed, whether the raised tissue is a keloid or another scar type, when scar treatment can begin, how recurrence will be addressed, and which wound changes require urgent contact.

Questions people ask

Can an open, draining wound be called a keloid?

An open or draining wound needs assessment for infection or delayed healing; a keloid is established overgrown scar tissue.

Should I wait if a scar is becoming larger?

Arrange a review, especially when growth is accompanied by itch, pain, bleeding, or rubbing against clothing.
