Keloid treatment with silicone gel

Silicone gel forms a thin layer over closed skin. This reduces water loss and may make a scar feel less dry, tight, or itchy as it matures. It is intended for intact skin, not a wound that is open, wet, infected, or scabbed unless a clinician specifically advises otherwise. Keloids differ from ordinary scars because they extend beyond the original injury and can remain active after the wound looks healed.

Clean and dry the area, apply a thin film as directed, and allow it to dry before covering it or putting clothing over it. Stop and ask for advice if burning, rash, blistering, or worsening itch develops. Consistent use matters more than applying a thick layer. A dermatologist may pair silicone with steroid injections, pressure, laser treatment, freezing, or surgery when the keloid is bulky, painful, or growing. Keep silicone away from the eye surface and follow product instructions for sensitive areas.

Have the scar reviewed if it continues enlarging, becomes painful, bleeds, breaks down, or develops discharge. Get prompt help for spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe swelling, or fever. If the diagnosis has not been confirmed, arrange an examination before relying on gel alone.
