What should you know about a small keloid?

Short answer

A small keloid is raised scar tissue that may be easier to treat early, but it can still enlarge or return.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What its size tells you

Small size describes the amount of visible scar tissue, not whether the scar is active. A small keloid may be firm, shiny, itchy, sensitive, or darker or lighter than surrounding skin. It can follow a piercing, acne spot, vaccination, cut, or operation and may extend beyond the original injury.

A clinician checks the border, texture, colour, growth pattern, and symptoms. This helps distinguish a keloid from a thick scar that remains within the wound and from other types of skin lump.

Practical next steps

Photograph the area in consistent light and note changes in size, itch, stinging, or tenderness. Avoid picking, squeezing, piercing, or applying harsh home remedies. A dermatologist may discuss an injection into the scar, selected laser treatment, freezing, pressure-based care, or another approach. Surgery is not automatically needed for a small lesion.

If the keloid followed a piercing, remove ongoing friction only with professional advice so the area is not traumatised. Protect exposed scar tissue from sun to reduce colour contrast during healing.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if the lump is enlarging, uncomfortable, or changing after an injury. Get prompt help for warmth, spreading redness, discharge, marked swelling, or fever. These features can point to infection and should not be attributed to a keloid without examination.

Questions to take along

Ask whether the scar is a keloid or another lesion, whether treatment is appropriate while it is small, and what signs should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Should every small keloid be removed?

No. Observation or non-surgical treatment may be reasonable, depending on symptoms, growth, location, and personal goals.

Can a small keloid grow bigger?

Yes. Some keloids enlarge beyond the original injury, so changes in size or symptoms merit assessment.
