Keloid scar after a mosquito bite

Mosquito bites often cause a short-lived itchy bump. A keloid is different: it persists after the initial irritation and may slowly become thicker or wider than the original spot. Its surface can be smooth or shiny, and its colour may differ from surrounding skin.

The scar can occur on any injured skin, although the chest, shoulders, jawline, and ears are common sites. A clinician can assess whether the raised area is a keloid, another type of scar, or an ongoing bite-related problem.

Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and reduce rubbing from straps or tight clothing. Do not pierce or shave down the lump. If it is changing, uncomfortable, or cosmetically troubling, arrange a skin assessment rather than treating it with unlabelled bleaching or steroid products.

Seek prompt assessment if the lump grows quickly, becomes ulcerated, or starts draining. Redness, heat, worsening swelling, pus, or fever can point to infection. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or face after a bite.

Ask whether the bite has healed fully, what makes the lesion a keloid, and whether symptom relief or flattening is the main goal. Ask how sun exposure, skin tone, and the scar's position affect the choice of treatment.
