Keloid removal silicone sheets: what to know

A keloid is scar tissue that extends beyond the original injury and can remain raised, firm, itchy, tender, or darker than nearby skin. A silicone sheet creates a flexible covering over healed skin and may help maintain hydration and reduce friction. Improvement is gradual and depends on the scar's age, size, location, and how consistently the sheet is used.

Use silicone only after the surface has closed. A dermatologist can check whether a bump is a keloid or another type of skin lump; a skin lump does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Wash and dry the area, apply the sheet as directed, and remove it if the skin becomes persistently irritated. Clean reusable sheets as instructed and stop adhesive contact over broken skin. Do not cut into or scratch the scar.

If a sheet is not enough, a clinician may discuss steroid injection into the skin, laser approaches, freezing treatment, or surgery. Keloid removal surgery needs a plan to reduce the chance of the scar returning; treatment choice depends on the scar and your skin.

Arrange a review if the scar grows beyond the original wound, becomes increasingly painful or itchy, cracks, bleeds, or changes quickly. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or a wound that is opening, because these signs can indicate infection or another wound problem.

Ask whether the scar is a keloid, how long to try silicone, what irritation should prompt a break, and whether an injection or another treatment is suitable. Mention any previous keloids before considering a new procedure.
