What should you know about keloid removal at home?

A keloid is made of dense scar tissue, not trapped fluid that can be drained. Home cutting, tying, burning, or applying strong chemicals can cause bleeding, infection, burns, colour change, and a new injury that stimulates more scar growth. Unsterile needles and tools add risk even when the area looks small.

Not every raised mark is a keloid. Acne, a cyst, an allergic reaction, an inflamed piercing, or another skin lump may need a different approach, so diagnosis comes before removal.

Leave the scar intact, wash gently, and prevent rubbing from clothing or jewellery. If you have already injured it, apply gentle pressure to minor bleeding with clean material, cover the wound, and arrange medical advice. Avoid household acids, scraping devices, unprescribed creams, and online removal methods.

A dermatologist can discuss steroid injections, laser treatment, freezing treatment, or surgical removal when appropriate. Surgery may need a wider prevention plan because a new incision can also form a keloid. Keep follow-up appointments so the response and any regrowth can be reviewed.

Seek prompt care for uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, severe pain, or a wound after attempted removal. Arrange assessment for a scar that is enlarging, itchy, tender, or limiting movement, even if the skin surface is closed.
