Keloid pimple treatment: what to know

Inflammation from acne can injure deeper skin and leave a raised scar. A keloid extends beyond the original pimple area, while a hypertrophic scar stays within it. An active pimple, cyst, post-inflammatory mark, or infection may also be mistaken for a keloid. Location, firmness, growth, tenderness, discharge, and whether the lump crosses the original area help a clinician assess it.

A keloid is a scar response, not a sign that the pimple is still infected. Treating active acne can help prevent new injuries, but it will not necessarily flatten an established keloid.

Avoid squeezing, puncturing, harsh scrubs, and unprescribed steroid or bleaching products. Reduce friction and protect the area from picking or repeated shaving injury. A dermatologist may discuss steroid injections, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or surgical removal based on the scar’s size, position, symptoms, and history. A scar can regrow after removal, so a plan may include review or additional treatment.

If acne is still active, ask for a plan that controls new inflammation without irritating the raised scar. Mention any previous keloids before cosmetic procedures or injections.

Seek assessment when a post-pimple bump keeps enlarging, spreads beyond the original spot, becomes painful or itchy, or affects sleep or movement. Get prompt help for pus, fever, spreading redness, marked warmth, sudden bleeding, or a rapidly changing lesion. These features need an examination for infection or another diagnosis.

Ask whether the lesion is active acne, a cyst, a hypertrophic scar, or a keloid; which treatment fits its location; and how acne control should be coordinated with scar care. Ask about expected skin changes, follow-up, and warning signs after treatment.
