Keloid on stomach: what to know

Short answer
A stomach keloid is excess scar tissue that grows beyond an injury, but a raised mark needs examination before it is labelled a keloid.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible triggers
- Operations, burns, piercings, injections, and inflamed skin
- Helpful observation
- Note whether the mark extends beyond the original injury
Understanding the mark
A keloid can follow an operation, piercing, vaccination, burn, scratch, or inflamed spot on the abdomen. Unlike a scar that stays within the wound outline, a keloid may push into nearby skin and remain raised. It can be smooth or lumpy, itchy, tender, tight, or sensitive when waistbands press against it. A scar that stays within the original wound may be hypertrophic instead. A cyst, inflamed hair follicle, or another skin lump can also look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.
Care and treatment choices
Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and reduce friction from tight waistbands while arranging an assessment. Do not pierce, drain, burn, or apply strong bleaching or peeling products to the mark. Treatment may include an intralesional steroid injection, cryotherapy, laser work, or surgery, depending on its depth, symptoms, location, and previous response. A plan may combine methods because removing visible tissue does not by itself prevent new scar growth. When to seek care
Arrange routine medical review if the mark is growing, painful, itchy, or interfering with clothing or movement. Seek prompt care if it becomes hot, increasingly red, drains pus, causes fever, opens, or bleeds repeatedly. A new lump that changes quickly or has no clear preceding injury also deserves assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the mark is a keloid, what triggered it, whether treatment could alter skin colour, how friction should be managed, and what follow-up is needed after treatment.

Questions people ask
Is every raised stomach scar a keloid?
No. Hypertrophic scars, cysts, inflammation, and other lumps can look raised, so an examination is useful.
Can clothing make a stomach keloid worse?
Repeated pressure and rubbing may increase irritation and symptoms, so looser clothing can be more comfortable while you seek advice.
