Keloid on the chin: what to know

A keloid develops when scar tissue continues to build beyond the boundary of a skin injury. On the chin, common sources of injury can include acne inflammation, shaving cuts, picked spots or cosmetic procedures. The area may become firm, smooth, itchy or tender and can gradually widen. A new painful lump with drainage may be infection or a cyst rather than a keloid.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid picking and reduce repeated razor trauma. Do not try to flatten the lesion with home needles or strong peeling products. A dermatologist may consider intralesional steroid injection, cryotherapy, pulsed dye laser, fractional laser or surgery.
