What should you know about keloid navel piercing?

A keloid is scar tissue that extends beyond the original piercing injury. It may feel firm, become itchy or tender, and enlarge gradually around the jewellery site. A piercing infection can instead cause warmth, spreading redness, discharge, or worsening pain. Irritation from tight clothing, snagging, or repeated movement can delay healing and make either problem harder to judge. A clinician can examine the skin and decide whether the jewellery, the scar, or an infection needs attention.

Stop twisting or pulling the jewellery and avoid adding another piercing through the bump. Wear loose clothing that does not catch on the navel, cleanse gently, and keep the area dry afterward. Do not puncture, squeeze, or apply harsh household substances. A dermatologist may discuss steroid injection, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or surgery; the choice depends on scar activity, position, symptoms, and whether infection is present.

Arrange review if the lump keeps growing, becomes painful or itchy, or catches on clothing. Seek prompt care for pus, foul-smelling drainage, spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, or rapidly increasing pain. Jewellery that is embedded, very tight, or causing skin breakdown also needs timely assessment; do not force it out yourself.
