What should you know about keloid microblading?

Short answer

Microblading can trigger a keloid in people who heal with excess scar tissue, so seek a skin assessment before adding further pigment or trauma.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Repeated brow punctures can activate excess scar formation.

Pause further procedures and arrange a dermatology assessment.

What a keloid after microblading may mean

A keloid is a firm, raised scar that grows beyond the original injury. Microblading uses many small punctures to place pigment in the brow skin; that repeated injury can stimulate excess collagen in someone prone to keloids. A bump that is simply crusted, irritated, or infected may look different, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Keloids can itch, feel tender, darken, or continue enlarging after the skin seems closed.

What to do now

Pause microblading, touch-ups, exfoliation, and home needling over the area until a dermatologist examines it. Do not cut, squeeze, or burn the bump, and avoid unapproved scar products on broken skin. Keep the area gently clean and protect it from friction and sun exposure. A clinician may discuss intralesional steroid injection, laser options, cryotherapy, or carefully selected surgery; treatment depends on the scar's size, activity, colour, and previous response.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if the raised area is growing, repeatedly itchy, painful, bleeding, or restricting brow movement. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening pain, because those features can point to infection rather than scar growth. Bring the date of the procedure, products used, and photographs showing how the area changed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bump is a keloid, another scar type, or an infection; whether future microblading should be avoided; which treatment could flatten or soften it; and how pigment, skin tone, and prior scars affect the plan.

Questions people ask

Can microblading make a keloid worse?

Further punctures or rubbing may keep an active scar irritated, so wait for clinical advice before a touch-up.

Is every bump after microblading a keloid?

No. Irritation, infection, a hypertrophic scar, or trapped pigment can also cause a bump and need different care.
