What should you know about keloid getting bigger?

Keloids form when healing produces more collagen than the skin needs. Unlike a flat scar, the tissue can extend past the original cut, piercing, acne spot, or injection site. It may feel firm and become itchy, tender, darker, or more noticeable as it expands. Growth can be gradual, and a changing lump still deserves an examination because other skin conditions can resemble a keloid.

Measure changes by taking occasional photographs from the same angle rather than touching the area repeatedly. Avoid picking, rubbing, or trying to drain it. Protect it from friction and sun, and arrange a dermatology appointment if it continues to enlarge or interferes with sleep, movement, or clothing. Treatment may involve steroid injections, laser or freezing treatment, or a procedure chosen for the scar’s location and behaviour.

Seek prompt care for heat, spreading redness, pus, fever, sudden swelling, bleeding, an open sore, or severe pain. These signs may indicate infection or another diagnosis. Even without urgent symptoms, book an assessment for steady enlargement, new limitation of movement, or persistent itch and tenderness.

Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed, whether treatment can slow further expansion, and which approach fits the scar’s site. Discuss what follow-up will show whether it is settling or remaining active.
