What should you know about keloid from pimple?

Inflamed acne can injure the deeper skin, especially when a spot is picked, squeezed, or repeatedly rubbed. A keloid grows beyond the boundary of that injury, while a depressed acne scar stays below the skin and a hypertrophic scar remains within the original wound. A persistent bump may also be active acne, an ingrown hair, cyst, or another skin lump, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Keloids are often smooth and firm, with possible itching, tenderness, colour change, or gradual enlargement. Avoid picking at the area and treat new acne gently so further inflammation does not add injury.

Arrange a dermatology review if the mark is growing, uncomfortable, repeatedly inflamed, or affecting how you feel about your skin. Take note of when the pimple healed and whether the raised area extends beyond it. Depending on the examination, care may include an intralesional steroid injection, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or surgery. Active acne may need its own treatment plan, while a scar requires a different approach. Follow-up can help monitor changes and detect renewed growth.

Do not try to flatten the area with needles, blades, strong acids, or unprescribed steroid creams. Protect healed skin from irritation and use gentle cleansing.

Seek prompt care if the area becomes hot, rapidly red or swollen, increasingly painful, or begins draining pus, or if you develop fever. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, or facial symptoms that affect breathing.

Ask whether the mark is a keloid, hypertrophic scar, active acne, or cyst; whether acne treatment is also needed; and which option is least likely to irritate the surrounding skin.
