What should you know about keloid from belly piercing?

A navel piercing can be exposed to clothing friction, movement, and repeated pulling. If scar tissue grows beyond the original channel, it may form a smooth or irregular raised area that remains after the piercing has healed. A keloid is only one possibility. Irritation, infection, a hypertrophic scar, or a cyst can also cause a bump, and their treatments differ.

Notice whether the area is expanding, itchy, tender, wet, crusted, or painful when clothing presses on it. Do not assume that a bump is acne, and do not repeatedly handle the jewellery to test it.

Arrange a dermatology assessment when the growth persists or interferes with clothing, exercise, sleep, or comfort. Keep friction low with loose clothing and gentle cleaning, and avoid squeezing, cutting, or applying irritant products. A clinician may consider steroid injections into the scar, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or removal surgery. Treatment is chosen after checking whether the tissue is a keloid and whether infection or an embedded piercing is present. Review is useful because scar growth can restart after treatment.

If the jewellery is stuck or the skin is splitting around it, do not pull it out at home. A clinician or trained piercer can advise on safe handling while medical concerns are checked.

Seek prompt care if the navel becomes hot, increasingly red, swollen, very painful, or starts draining pus or blood, especially with fever. Urgent assessment is needed for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the growth is a keloid or another piercing problem, whether the jewellery should stay in place, which option suits the navel, and how recurrence or infection will be checked.
