What should you know about keloid dangerous?

Short answer
Keloids are usually a local scar problem rather than a dangerous disease, but pain, infection, restricted movement or rapid change should be medically assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- General nature
- A local overgrowth of scar tissue
- Possible problems
- Itch, pain, tightness or movement limits
- Red flags
- Rapid change, infection signs or non-healing skin
What risks a keloid can cause
Keloids do not spread through the body, but they can cause ongoing itch, tenderness, tightness or sensitivity. A large scar may catch on clothing or affect movement when it lies across a joint. Scars near the ear, nose or eyelid can create location-specific problems. A new lump is not automatically a keloid: infection, a different scar type or another skin lesion may resemble it and needs consideration during an examination.
What to do next
Arrange a dermatology review if the scar is growing or interfering with daily activities. Do not cut it, burn it or use unprescribed strong creams. Depending on the examination, care may include steroid injection, silicone or pressure therapy, laser treatment, cryotherapy or surgery. Protect the area from rubbing and sun after the skin has healed, and attend follow-up if treatment is started.
Warning signs
Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, redness, pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain or swelling. Urgent help is appropriate for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or neck, or a scar that is bleeding heavily. Arrange assessment for a sore that does not heal, an ulcer, or a lump that changes quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the lesion is clinically consistent with a keloid, what symptom or functional risks apply to its location, and which treatment offers the safest balance for your skin.

Questions people ask
Can a keloid turn into cancer?
A keloid is scar tissue, not cancer, but a changing or bleeding lump should still be examined to confirm the diagnosis.
Is a painful keloid an emergency?
Pain alone is not usually an emergency, but sudden severe pain, spreading redness, fever or drainage needs prompt care.
