What should you know about keloid by piercing?

A piercing creates a controlled skin injury, but friction, pressure, inflammation and individual scar-forming tendencies can influence healing. A keloid may begin as a small thickening and expand beyond the piercing hole. It may be smooth, shiny, itchy, sensitive or darker than surrounding skin. A bump limited to the piercing channel may instead be irritation, a hypertrophic scar or infection, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Avoid twisting jewellery, squeezing the lump or applying harsh home remedies. Keep the site clean according to professional piercing or medical advice, and reduce pressure from headphones, helmets or clothing. A dermatologist may discuss steroid injections, silicone or pressure therapy, laser treatment, cryotherapy or surgery. If jewellery is embedded, painful or surrounded by spreading inflammation, have it assessed rather than forcing it out.

Arrange a medical review for a lump that keeps enlarging, becomes painful, limits ear movement or repeatedly catches on clothing. Seek prompt care for pus, fever, spreading redness, warmth or rapidly increasing swelling. Urgent assessment is needed if the jewellery is swallowed, inhaled, deeply embedded, or if swelling affects breathing.
