What should you know about keep bleeding after sex?

Repeated bleeding after sex is not something to ignore; it may result from irritation, infection, hormonal tissue changes or a condition needing assessment. Many causes are treatable, but the source cannot be identified safely from the bleeding alone.

Friction, dryness, a small tear, cervical changes and infections such as Chlamydia can cause bleeding after penetration. Around menopause, Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make vaginal tissue thinner and drier, so contact may trigger discomfort or spotting. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can also present with bleeding after sex, while Vaginal Cancer is less common but may need consideration. These conditions are not diagnosed by the symptom alone. A clinician may ask about timing, contraception, pregnancy possibility, pain, discharge and your last cervical screening, then examine the vagina and cervix.

Book a medical appointment if bleeding happens repeatedly, occurs after menopause, or comes with pain or unusual discharge. Until assessed, use lubrication, avoid penetration if it causes pain, and do not douche. Note the amount, colour, timing and whether bleeding follows every episode. A clinician may test for infections, check the cervix and arrange further evaluation. If abnormal cervical tissue needs investigation, a Cone Biopsy may be discussed, but it is not required for every case.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, weakness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Emergency assessment is also appropriate if bleeding follows sexual assault or you may have an injury. Prompt review matters when symptoms are new, worsening or associated with feeling unwell.
