What should you know about a Keeler otoscope head?

The head directs light through a small disposable or reusable speculum so a clinician can see the ear canal and tympanic membrane. It may help identify wax, irritation, a foreign object, fluid, or changes that fit an ear infection. The device supports an examination; it does not diagnose a condition by itself, and a clear view can be limited by wax, swelling, pain, or movement.

Sit still and tell the clinician if the ear becomes painful. A child may need a parent or carer to help them remain comfortable and steady during the examination. Do not put cotton buds, oil, or other objects into the canal beforehand. A clinician may choose a different speculum, clean visible wax, or arrange another assessment when the view is blocked. An otoscope is used as part of a GP or child health consultation.

Seek prompt assessment for severe ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, a lodged object, marked dizziness, or swelling behind the ear. Emergency help is appropriate with facial weakness, confusion, or a severe headache with fever. Avoid probing the ear while waiting, since pressure can worsen an injury.

Ask what was visible, whether wax or inflammation affected the view, whether hearing should be checked, and which symptoms would mean you need review sooner.
