Jaw clenching and headache

Short answer
Jaw clenching can strain the chewing muscles and jaw joint, producing a pressure-like headache around the temples, forehead, or face.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical jaw clues
- Morning soreness, temple pressure, tooth wear, clicking, or pain with chewing
- Record
- Timing, triggers, clenching, sleep, fluids, fever, congestion, and neurological symptoms
What may be happening
Clenching while concentrating or sleeping can leave the jaw tired, tender, stiff, or difficult to open, with headache on waking or after stressful periods. Other symptoms can have different sources: congestion and facial pressure may occur with allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, or a cold; fever and body symptoms may accompany COVID-19, dengue fever, or heat exhaustion; thirst and dark urine can point toward dehydration. Anxiety can increase muscle tension, but a headache should not automatically be attributed to stress.
Practical measures
At rest, let the lips meet lightly while keeping the teeth apart and the tongue relaxed. Reduce gum and chewy foods, use a warm compress on the jaw muscles, and practise gentle jaw movement without forcing a stretch. Drink fluids regularly, especially in hot weather, and keep a note of sleep, clenching, headache timing, congestion, fever, and triggers. A clinician or dentist can discuss a night guard when appropriate; do not alter your bite with unregulated devices.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment if headaches recur, worsen, follow a new pattern, or come with jaw locking, tooth damage, vision changes, or persistent vomiting. Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, stiff neck with fever, trouble speaking, or headache after a significant injury. Heat exposure with confusion or inability to keep fluids down also needs urgent care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your jaw muscles or joint are tender, whether another headache pattern needs consideration, and whether dental review is useful. Tell the clinician about waking with jaw soreness, tooth wear, medicines, sleep quality, congestion, fever, fluid intake, and any neurological symptoms.

Questions people ask
Can stress cause jaw-clenching headache?
Stress may increase clenching and muscle tension, but recurring or changing headaches still deserve assessment for other causes.
Is a night guard suitable for everyone?
No. A dentist should assess the jaw, teeth, and bite before recommending or fitting a night guard.
