What should you know about jaundice skin around eyes?

Jaundice happens when bilirubin builds up and can make the whites of the eyes, skin, and sometimes the lining of the mouth look yellow. Changes are often easier to notice around the eyes, but lighting and skin tone can affect what you see. Causes include increased red-cell breakdown, liver inflammation, or reduced flow of bile. Gallstones and viral hepatitis are examples of conditions that can present with jaundice; the colour does not identify which one is responsible. Some yellow eyelid patches are skin deposits rather than jaundice, so examination matters.

Check the colour in natural light and note whether the whites of the eyes have changed. Arrange a medical appointment promptly if the change is new or persists. A clinician may ask about urine, stools, abdominal pain, fever, alcohol, travel, medicines, and previous liver problems, then order blood tests or imaging. Avoid alcohol and do not start herbal or imported remedies until their ingredients have been checked. Keep a list of medicines and supplements for the appointment.

Seek urgent help for yellowing with confusion, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, bleeding, extreme sleepiness, or difficulty staying awake. Dark urine, pale stools, or rapidly worsening yellowing also need prompt assessment. A newborn with yellowing should be assessed through maternity or paediatric services rather than managed with home remedies.
