What should you know about Jamaican vomiting sickness?

Short answer
Jamaican vomiting sickness is a poisoning linked to unripe ackee fruit and can cause severe vomiting and low blood sugar.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
The danger comes from a toxin in unripe ackee, including fruit that has not opened naturally or has been prepared incorrectly. Symptoms can begin after eating and may include repeated vomiting, stomach pain, weakness, dizziness, confusion or sleepiness.
This illness is different from common Gastroenteritis, although both can cause vomiting. A person may have low blood sugar without recognising it, so feeling faint, confused or unusually drowsy is concerning. Children can become seriously unwell quickly.
What to do
Stop eating the suspected food and seek urgent medical help. Do not make yourself vomit, give alcohol or rely on home remedies. If the person is awake and able to swallow, small sips of fluid may be reasonable while help is arranged, but this must not delay assessment.
Keep the food packaging or remaining fruit available for clinicians if it can be done safely. Tell them what was eaten and when, and whether anyone else who shared the meal is ill.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for repeated vomiting with weakness, fainting, confusion, seizures, difficulty waking, cold clammy skin or trouble breathing. Vomiting after suspected ackee exposure warrants prompt assessment, even if symptoms seem to settle.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether blood sugar and other tests are needed, how long observation should continue, what symptoms should prompt a return visit and how to avoid unsafe ackee preparation. Mention medicines, diabetes and pregnancy if relevant.

Questions people ask
Is Jamaican vomiting sickness ordinary food poisoning?
It is a food-related poisoning caused by ackee toxin, not the usual infection that causes many cases of food poisoning.
Can children be affected?
Yes. Children may deteriorate quickly, so vomiting after suspected ackee exposure needs urgent medical advice.
