During a test, you breathe through a mouthpiece while the device records airflow and exhaled volume. You usually take a full breath in and blow out hard for as long as instructed; the technician may repeat the manoeuvre to check consistency. The result is interpreted with your symptoms, examination and other information. A spirometer supports assessment of conditions that narrow or stiffen the airways, but its reading is not a diagnosis by itself.

Wear clothing that allows your chest and abdomen to expand. Follow the clinic's instructions about inhalers, smoking, meals and exercise rather than changing medicines on your own. Tell the technician if you feel dizzy, have chest pain, recently had surgery, or cannot make a strong seal around the mouthpiece. Sit upright, use the nose clip if provided, and follow the breathing instructions closely.

Tell the testing team immediately if forced breathing causes severe breathlessness, chest pain, faintness or wheezing that does not settle with rest. Seek emergency help for sudden severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion or inability to speak in full phrases. A planned spirometry appointment should not delay care for an acute breathing problem.
