What should you know about IV for dehydration at home?

An IV line delivers fluid directly into a vein when drinking is difficult, vomiting continues, or the body needs faster replacement. Home treatment still needs a qualified clinician, suitable equipment, and a plan for monitoring. The fluid type and amount depend on your symptoms, examination, medicines, kidney function, and heart health. An infusion does not treat every reason for dehydration; vomiting or diarrhoea from gastroenteritis, heat exhaustion, or another illness may need separate care.

Contact a medical service before arranging an infusion. Share how long symptoms have lasted, whether you can keep fluids down, your urine pattern, and any kidney or heart condition. If you can drink safely, take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink while awaiting advice. During an infusion, keep the site visible and report pain, swelling, redness, chills, breathlessness, or a new rash. Do not reuse equipment or allow an untrained person to insert the line.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, chest discomfort, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. A high temperature with worsening illness, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms after significant heat exposure also needs prompt assessment. Dark urine can occur with dehydration, but persistent or unusual urine changes should be assessed rather than treated with an infusion alone.
