IV fluids for dehydration during pregnancy

A pregnancy clinician considers your stage of pregnancy, vomiting or diarrhoea, urine output, dizziness, pulse and blood pressure. They may also assess whether you can drink and whether another problem is causing the symptoms. The IV solution is selected and monitored according to your condition and medical history.

Persistent pregnancy sickness can prevent enough fluid and nourishment from staying down. Dehydration can add strain when you are already losing fluid, so early contact with your maternity team is sensible. IV fluids replace fluid; they do not by themselves resolve the reason you are vomiting.

Contact your maternity team or clinician if you cannot keep drinks down, are passing very little urine, or feel faint when standing. Tell them about prescribed medicines, supplements, medical conditions and any previous reaction to an IV. Do not start or stop a medicine for nausea without pregnancy-specific advice.

If you can swallow safely, take small, frequent sips and use an oral rehydration solution only as advised. Rest, avoid overheating, and return for review if symptoms continue after fluids. During an IV, report pain, swelling, redness or burning around the cannula.

Seek urgent maternity or emergency care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, chest pain, trouble breathing, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, inability to keep any fluids down, or markedly reduced urine.

Call promptly for contractions, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced fetal movement after you have been advised how to monitor it, or a high fever. These signs need pregnancy assessment rather than an assumption that dehydration is the only cause.

Ask which fluid is appropriate, whether blood or urine tests are needed, how nausea will be treated, what you may drink at home, and which pregnancy symptoms require immediate review.
