What should you know about IV fluid for hypotension?

Hypotension means blood pressure is lower than expected for the person or situation. It can follow vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding, infection, heat exposure, medicines, or heart-related problems. A fluid infusion can increase the volume circulating in the bloodstream when dehydration or another fluid loss is present, but it will not correct every cause of low blood pressure.

A clinician checks symptoms, pulse, blood pressure, urine output, medicines, and medical history. Too much fluid can be harmful, especially with heart or kidney disease, so the amount and speed should be individually chosen.

Sit or lie down if light-headed and rise slowly. Avoid driving while faint or unsteady. Sip an appropriate oral fluid if you are awake, able to swallow, and not repeatedly vomiting; do not delay care when symptoms are severe. Arrange a GP Consultation for recurring episodes or unexplained readings, and mention any Dizziness, diarrhoea, bleeding, fever, or new medicine.

Call emergency services for collapse, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, cold clammy skin, heavy bleeding, or sudden marked weakness. Urgent assessment is also needed when faintness follows a serious injury, infection symptoms, or inability to keep fluids down. Do not treat a concerning cause with a home infusion.
