What should you know about IUGR and weight?

Estimated fetal weight comes from ultrasound measurements, so it is an approximation rather than a direct weighing. Clinicians look at the pattern across scans, the baby's abdominal growth, fluid around the baby, placenta, and umbilical-cord blood flow. A small baby may be healthy and naturally small, while a change in growth can suggest reduced placental support. The context matters more than one measurement.

Keep every Growth Scan and antenatal review so the team can compare measurements over time. Follow the movement guidance given to you and tell the maternity unit about a noticeable reduction. Ask whether blood pressure, urine checks, or additional tests are needed. Food, rest, and supplements cannot correct every cause of restricted growth, so use only treatments recommended for your pregnancy.

Call your maternity unit immediately if movements are reduced or absent, or if you have bleeding, fluid leakage, painful contractions, severe headache, visual symptoms, or sudden swelling. These warning signs need prompt assessment even when the last estimated weight was reassuring. Depending on the findings, your team may arrange Fetal Heart Monitoring, repeat scans, or discuss Induction of Labour.

Ask how the estimated weight compares with earlier scans, whether the growth pattern is concerning, how often monitoring is needed, and which result would alter the timing or mode of birth.
