What should you know about an IUGR scan?

Ultrasound may measure the baby’s head, abdomen and thigh bone, then use those measurements to estimate size. The abdomen can change with nutrition and placental supply, so clinicians look at the complete pattern rather than one number. They may assess amniotic fluid and Doppler flow in vessels linked with the placenta and baby. A scan is a snapshot; comparison with earlier scans and accurate pregnancy dates helps show whether growth is continuing.

Follow the preparation instructions from the imaging unit and bring your maternity notes if requested. Ask when the report will be reviewed and whether another scan, Fetal Heart Monitoring or a specialist appointment is needed. Results can lead to routine follow-up, closer surveillance or a conversation about birth timing. If delivery is advised, your clinician can explain whether Induction of Labour is suitable and what alternatives mean.

Get prompt maternity advice for reduced or changed fetal movements, bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, vision changes or feeling suddenly very unwell. A planned scan does not replace urgent assessment when symptoms develop. Use the emergency route advised by your maternity unit if you cannot reach the usual team.

Ask how the measurements compare with the previous scan, whether fluid and Doppler findings are reassuring, and when the next review should happen. Clarify which movement pattern is normal for you, what result would change monitoring, and how birth decisions would be made.
