What does IUGR mean?

The term may appear after an ultrasound suggests that the baby is not growing along the expected pattern. Some babies are naturally small and healthy, while others grow slowly because the placenta is not delivering enough oxygen and nutrients, or because of another pregnancy or fetal health issue. A single measurement does not explain the whole picture. Clinicians compare measurements over time and consider blood flow, fluid around the baby, gestational age, and the baby's movements.

Keep the appointments arranged by your maternity team so growth and wellbeing can be checked. A Growth Scan can measure the baby's size and assess fluid and blood flow. Do not start supplements, restrict activity, or change medicines because of the term alone; ask which plan fits your findings.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if your baby's movements are noticeably reduced or different from the pattern you know. Seek urgent assessment for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache with vision changes, or sudden swelling. These symptoms need assessment because they can signal a pregnancy complication, whether or not IUGR has been mentioned.

Ask what measurement led to the concern, whether growth is changing over time, how often scans or heart monitoring are planned, and which movement changes should prompt a call. You can also ask what findings would make earlier birth safer and how the plan may change as pregnancy progresses.
