IUD for irregular periods

Irregular periods can mean bleeding arrives unpredictably, lasts for different lengths of time, or varies in amount. Causes include cycles without ovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, premature ovarian insufficiency, thyroid or other hormone changes, pregnancy, and some medicines.

A hormonal IUD often causes spotting or unpredictable bleeding soon after insertion, then may make bleeding lighter or absent for some people. It does not reliably restore ovulation or explain why cycles were irregular. A copper IUD can also alter bleeding, often by making periods heavier or crampier. The right choice depends on contraception needs and the reason for the irregularity.

Record bleeding dates, flow, pain, pregnancy possibility, medicines, weight changes, acne, increased facial hair, hot flushes, or vaginal dryness. Share this record at an appointment. A clinician may consider a pregnancy test, examination, blood tests, or other assessment before recommending an IUD. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Arrange a medical review for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, a sudden change after stable cycles, or periods stopping unexpectedly, particularly if pregnancy is possible.
