Itchy under-eye skin: causes and care

Allergic conjunctivitis can cause itchy, watery, red eyes, while allergic rhinitis may bring sneezing and a runny or blocked nose. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy can produce symptoms after indoor exposure. Cosmetics, creams, cleansers, eye drops, and contact lenses may irritate the delicate skin or trigger contact dermatitis. Rubbing can increase redness and swelling and may damage the skin barrier. One itchy patch without eye symptoms may be a skin problem rather than an eye infection.

Do not rub or scratch. Apply a cool, clean compress and pause new cosmetics, creams, and eye products until the skin settles. Wash hands before touching the area, keep pets and bedding clean if exposure seems relevant, and use preservative-free lubricating drops only when a pharmacist or clinician considers them suitable. Avoid putting steroid or antibiotic creams near the eye unless prescribed.

Seek emergency help for sudden swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, or faintness. Arrange same-day assessment for severe eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, injury, marked one-sided swelling, pus, or fever. See a clinician if symptoms recur, spread, affect sleep, or do not improve after removing a suspected irritant. Contact-lens wearers should seek advice promptly for a painful or red eye.
