Itchy trachea and cough: what it can mean

A cold or acute bronchitis can inflame the breathing tubes and make coughing feel tickly. Allergic rhinitis may add nasal drainage, while asthma can cause cough, chest tightness, or wheeze after triggers such as exercise, dust, or cold air. Acid reflux can irritate the throat and airway, often after meals or when lying down. Bronchiectasis and chronic cough need clinical assessment, especially when mucus, repeated chest infections, or a long-lasting cough is present. In children, bronchiolitis is a separate illness that may affect breathing.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, and reduce exposure to dust, sprays, and cold dry air. Warm drinks may ease a tickle. Honey can soothe cough in adults and children over one year, but it is not suitable for infants. Follow any prescribed inhaler plan; do not borrow someone else’s inhaler or start antibiotics without assessment.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or coughing blood. Get urgent assessment for chest pain, a severe wheeze, marked drowsiness, dehydration, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange a medical review for a cough that persists, repeatedly returns, limits sleep or activity, or produces ongoing mucus. Babies and people with significant lung disease should be assessed sooner when breathing changes.
