Itchy throat, ears and nose: remedies to consider

The nose, throat, and middle ear are connected by nearby passages, so swelling and mucus in the nose can create pressure or an itchy sensation around the ears and throat. Allergic rhinitis commonly causes nose and throat itching with sneezing or watery eyes. A cold may cause congestion and drainage instead. Ear pain, discharge, hearing change, or one-sided symptoms suggest that an examination may be needed rather than self-treatment alone.

Use saline spray or a saline rinse for nasal mucus as directed, and drink fluids to keep secretions less irritating. Warm drinks, a humidifier, and avoiding smoke, dust, and strong scents may calm the throat. Do not put cotton buds, oils, or unprescribed drops into the ear. If allergies are suspected, a pharmacist or clinician can help select an appropriate allergy medicine and explain how to use it.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or tongue, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, or swelling behind the ear. Arrange an assessment for ear discharge, significant ear pain, fever, worsening symptoms, or symptoms that keep returning despite avoiding triggers.
