Itchy throat, cough and blocked nose

A Common Cold can swell the nasal lining and increase mucus, while drainage into the throat triggers coughing and tickling. Allergic Rhinitis may produce the same cluster, especially with sneezing, watery eyes or symptoms tied to dust, pollen or animals. House Dust Mite Allergy is one indoor trigger to consider when symptoms are worse in bedrooms or during cleaning.

Sinusitis or Chronic Sinusitis becomes more relevant when blockage accompanies facial pressure, reduced smell, thick drainage or symptoms that persist. Reflux, smoke and dry air can add throat irritation. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea may be worth discussing when long-term nasal blockage occurs with loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing or marked daytime sleepiness.

Drink fluids, rest, avoid smoke and keep the bedroom free from dust where possible. Saline nasal spray or a safe saline rinse may loosen secretions; clean equipment carefully and use appropriate water. Raise your head slightly during sleep if drainage is troublesome. A pharmacist can discuss Allergy Medication or other options, but check before using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, heart problems, glaucoma, are pregnant or take regular medicines.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, throat swelling, confusion or chest pain. Arrange prompt assessment for swelling around an eye, severe facial pain, a stiff neck, coughing blood, repeated nighttime breathing pauses or inability to keep fluids down. Make a routine appointment when blockage and cough persist, recur frequently or interfere with sleep and daily activities.
