Itchy throat causing vomiting

An itchy throat may lead to vomiting through gagging or forceful coughing, but allergy warning signs need urgent care. Vomiting can also worsen throat irritation and leave you dehydrated.

Post-nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis or a common cold can stimulate the gag reflex. A coughing fit may make the abdominal muscles contract hard enough to cause vomiting. Strong smells, dust, or a dry throat can intensify the cycle. Food allergy is a separate concern when throat itch starts soon after eating, particularly with hives, swelling, wheezing, dizziness, or repeated vomiting. Reflux may irritate the throat and cause nausea or retching, especially after meals or when lying down.

Think about whether vomiting followed coughing, gagging, eating, a new medicine, or an exposure. Keep the timing and associated symptoms available for a clinician.

After vomiting, rinse your mouth and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if tolerated. Avoid smoke, scents, and foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Rest upright and choose gentle foods once nausea settles. If nasal symptoms are present, ask a pharmacist about saline care or allergy medication. Do not take anti-sickness or cough medicines without checking that they are suitable for your age and health conditions.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, blue or grey lips, or an allergic reaction after food, medicine, or a sting. Seek urgent medical advice for blood or green material in vomit, severe chest or abdominal pain, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or worsening weakness. Arrange a review when episodes recur or the throat itch persists.
