Itchy throat all of a sudden: what to know

An abrupt tickle can occur after smoke, perfume, dust, dry air or vigorous talking. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing, a runny nose or watery eyes. A food allergy can begin soon after eating and may also cause mouth tingling, hives, swelling or stomach symptoms. A common cold may develop with congestion, cough, tiredness or a sore throat. The throat symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Move away from a suspected irritant and sip cool or warm fluids. Avoid smoking and alcohol while the lining feels irritated. If symptoms began after a particular food, do not eat more of it and record what happened. An adult pharmacist can discuss suitable allergy medication when allergy features are present; follow the label and mention pregnancy, chronic illness or other medicines.

Get emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, sudden tongue or throat swelling, or difficulty swallowing saliva. Seek prompt medical advice if symptoms are severe, keep returning, or occur with widespread hives or vomiting. Arrange a routine review if the irritation continues despite removing triggers.
