What should you know about itchy swollen hands in pregnancy?

Pregnancy can increase fluid retention, making fingers feel tight, especially later in the day or after standing. Heat, soaps, contact irritation, or eczema can add itching. Swelling that is one-sided, painful, red, or linked to an injury has a different pattern; for example, a Distal Radius Fracture can affect hand or wrist appearance after trauma. Contact maternity care promptly for severe or widespread itching, itching that is worse at night, swelling of the face, a severe headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, or a sudden rise in swelling. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or a hand that becomes blue, cold, or markedly painful. A clinician may check blood pressure, urine, liver-related markers, and circulation to separate pregnancy complications from local hand problems.
