Itchy skin and yellow eyes: what to know

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes is different from irritated, red, or pale skin around the eyes. It can occur when bile-related pigments build up in the body, and itching may appear without a primary rash. Medicines, infections, gallbladder or bile-duct problems, and liver conditions are among the possibilities. A clinician may ask about dark urine, pale stools, nausea, abdominal discomfort, alcohol, supplements, and recent medicines.

Arrange a medical appointment promptly rather than treating this as dry skin alone. Bring a list of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, and recent illnesses. Avoid starting herbal remedies or stopping prescribed treatment without advice. Keep the skin cool, use a bland moisturiser if it is dry, and avoid scratching while the cause is being checked.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, faintness, fever with chills, bleeding, or rapidly worsening yellowing. Urgent assessment is also needed if yellow eyes appear with very dark urine, unusually pale stools, or marked weakness. A new yellow colour that persists should not be explained away as an allergy without examination.

Ask what could be causing the yellowing, whether blood or imaging tests are needed, and which medicines or supplements may affect the liver. Tell the clinician when the eye colour and itching began, whether urine or stool colour changed, and whether a rash is present.
