Itchy skin and a swollen face: what to know

Raised, itchy patches that appear suddenly can fit hives. A new food, medicine, cosmetic, detergent, insect sting, or other exposure may trigger this pattern. Contact dermatitis can cause itching and irritation where a product touched the skin, and atopic dermatitis can cause a recurring itchy rash. Facial swelling can also occur with inflammation around the eyes or lips. The appearance, timing, and speed of change matter more than the itch alone.

Stop using any newly introduced skin, hair, or cosmetic product and gently rinse the area if residue may remain. Use a cool compress, avoid scratching, and choose loose, soft clothing. Do not apply a strong steroid or unfamiliar cream to the face without professional guidance. Take a clear photo and note recent foods, medicines, stings, and exposures so a clinician can assess the pattern.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly increasing swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Arrange prompt medical assessment if the swelling is new, keeps returning, involves the eyes, or is accompanied by fever, pain, blistering, or spreading redness. Mild symptoms that do not settle or interfere with sleep also deserve a clinical review.

Ask whether the pattern resembles hives, contact dermatitis, or another condition; which medicines or products should be avoided; and what symptoms should trigger emergency treatment. Mention how quickly the swelling began and whether anyone else developed a rash after the same exposure.
