Itchy Skin and Red Bumps: What to Know

Raised welts that appear and fade in different places can fit Hives. Dry, cracked, or scaly areas may fit Asteatotic Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis, while a rash limited to a product-contact area may fit Contact Dermatitis. Small itchy bumps that are worse at night, especially with similar itching in household members, can occur with Scabies. Warmth, tenderness, pus, crusting, or rapidly expanding redness suggests infection and needs assessment. The bump appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Use cool compresses, a fragrance-free moisturiser, and gentle cleansing. Avoid scratching, shaving over the bumps, and any new detergent, cosmetic, or topical medicine until the pattern is clearer. Take photographs in good light and note when the bumps began, where they spread, whether they move or fade, and any new food, medicine, product, travel, or contact exposure. A pharmacist or clinician can help select treatment after considering the pattern and your medical history.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Seek same-day care for a rapidly spreading rash, fever, significant pain, blistering, skin peeling, purple or bruiselike spots, or eye involvement.
