Itchy Skin and Dark Yellow Urine: What to Know

Urine can look darker when it is concentrated, such as after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or drinking too little. Itching may instead come from dry skin, a new product, eczema, hives, or another skin condition. The combination is more concerning when urine remains dark despite drinking normally or when the whites of the eyes or skin look yellow, stools become unusually pale, or there is pain under the ribs, nausea, or marked tiredness. Some medicines and supplements can also change urine colour.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether urine becomes lighter. Avoid alcohol until the cause is clearer. Review recently started medicines and supplements with a pharmacist rather than stopping prescribed treatment on your own. Note urine colour, bowel changes, eye or skin colour, itching severity, pain, fever, and fluid losses.

Seek urgent care for yellow eyes with confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, fever, or inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt medical advice for pale stools, very little urine, blood in urine, worsening itch, or dark urine that does not improve with hydration. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or facial swelling.
