Itchy scalp and ringworm treatment

Scalp ringworm, also called tinea capitis, can cause itch, flaking, broken hairs, hair loss, or bald patches. Some people develop tender swollen areas, crusting, or pus. These findings can resemble dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, or bacterial folliculitis, so the appearance alone may not confirm the diagnosis.

The fungus can spread through close contact and shared combs, brushes, hats, towels, or bedding. Children are often affected, but adults can develop it too. Hair practices should be discussed without delaying treatment.

Arrange a medical examination when itch is accompanied by bald patches, broken hairs, persistent scale, or tender inflamed areas. A clinician may examine the scalp and hair and decide whether testing is needed. Because the infection involves hair follicles, tablets or liquid taken by mouth are commonly needed; shampoo alone does not reliably clear infection inside the follicles.

Use the prescribed oral antifungal for the full course and report new symptoms or medicine concerns. A medicated shampoo may be added to reduce shedding of fungus from the scalp. Do not share hair tools or headwear, wash or replace items that touch the scalp as advised, and check close contacts if the clinician recommends it.

Seek prompt care for rapid hair loss, painful swelling, pus, extensive crusting, fever, or swollen neck glands. A soft tender lump or worsening inflammation needs timely review because severe inflammation can damage follicles. Urgent assessment is appropriate if the person is very unwell or the swelling approaches the face or eyes.
