Itchy red pubic area: possible causes

Redness in skin folds that feels moist or sore can occur with intertrigo, while a ring-shaped, scaly edge may fit ringworm. A reaction after shaving, waxing, a new wash, condom, pad, or laundry product can indicate contact dermatitis. Intense itch that is worse at night, with similar symptoms in close contacts, needs assessment for scabies. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash, and a drug rash can also affect this region. These possibilities overlap, so the appearance alone is not enough to diagnose the cause.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and wear loose, breathable underwear. Pause recently introduced fragranced products and avoid shaving or waxing until the skin settles. Keep towels and underwear personal, and avoid scratching or applying steroid, antifungal, or other medicated creams without suitable advice. Record when the rash began, what touched the area, and whether there is discharge, pain, sores, or a similar itch elsewhere.

Arrange prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, warmth, pus, fever, open sores, blisters, or swelling. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a widespread reaction after a medicine.
