What should you know about an itchy rash on the fingers?

Frequent handwashing, detergents, disinfectants, solvents, gloves, metals, and fragrances can cause Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis may produce dry, cracked, itchy skin, while small deep blisters on the sides of fingers can occur with hand eczema. Psoriasis may create persistent scale or cracks around joints and nails. Ringworm can affect one hand or form a scaly edge. Scabies may cause severe night itch with similar symptoms in household contacts. A Drug Rash usually affects more than the fingers, but a new medicine should still be mentioned during assessment.

Use lukewarm water, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick bland moisturiser after washing. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical work, with clean cotton liners if gloves make sweating worse, and remove rings while washing so moisture does not stay underneath. Do not burst blisters or peel scale. Pause new soaps, nail products, adhesives, and hand creams. If the rash is scaly or spreading, do not share towels or nail tools, and avoid applying several medicated creams before a clinician identifies the cause.

Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering or peeling rash. Get prompt assessment when fingers become very painful, hot, swollen, numb, difficult to bend, or drain pus, or when redness travels up the hand. Arrange a visit if cracks persist, work is affected, nails change, sleep is disturbed, or household members develop itch. Early review matters when the rash follows a medicine or chemical exposure.
