Itchy pubic area after a C-section: what to know

An itchy pubic area after a C-section may result from healing skin, adhesive or shaving irritation, but increasing redness, pain, discharge or fever needs prompt medical review. Itching can occur around the incision or nearby skin as sensation returns, yet the appearance and direction of symptoms matter.

Mild itch close to a closed, dry incision can accompany normal healing. Skin may also react to dressings, surgical glue, antiseptic, pads, sweat or friction. A rash outside the incision may be contact irritation. Infection is more concerning when redness spreads, the wound separates, pain increases, the area feels hot, or fluid has an unpleasant smell.

Numbness, tingling or altered sensation can surround a healing wound. Do not judge recovery by itch alone; inspect the area once daily with clean hands and follow the discharge instructions from your maternity team.

Keep the incision clean and dry as instructed, wear loose breathable clothing, and avoid scratching or pulling at glue, strips or scabs. Do not put creams, oils or powders on the wound unless your clinician has advised them. Wash hands before checking the area and use prescribed pain relief as directed.

Contact your maternity team promptly for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, worsening tenderness, pus, foul-smelling drainage, wound opening or fever. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, chest pain, breathlessness or a painful swollen leg. A rapidly spreading itchy rash or facial swelling after medicine also needs urgent assessment.
