What should you know about itchy nose and sneezing?

Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes, and clear nasal discharge after exposure to pollen, dust, or animal dander. House dust mites may trigger symptoms indoors, while pet allergy may cause symptoms around cats or dogs. A common cold can also irritate the nasal lining, usually alongside a blocked nose, sore throat, cough, or feeling unwell. The symptom pattern does not identify one condition by itself.

Notice where and when symptoms begin, such as after cleaning, entering a bedroom, or visiting a home with pets. Reduce exposure when possible, wash your face after outdoor activities, and keep hands away from the nose to limit further irritation. Saline nasal rinsing may clear irritants when used with safe, prepared water. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication suits you, especially if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, interfere with work, or remain unexplained. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives, particularly after food, medicine, or an insect sting. A high fever with severe illness, facial swelling, or severe one-sided facial pain also needs prompt assessment.
