Itchy, Irritated Throat and Cough: What to Know

A common cold or acute bronchitis can inflame the airways for a period after an infection. Allergic rhinitis may cause drainage that tickles the throat. Acid reflux can irritate the throat and trigger cough, especially after meals or when lying down. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze or chest tightness. Recurrent mucus and chest infections can occur with bronchiectasis, while bronchiolitis mainly affects young children. A cough that continues needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Drink regularly, rest your voice, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and strong scents. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant. If reflux seems linked, note meal timing and avoid lying down soon after eating. Follow prescribed inhalers as directed; do not borrow someone else’s inhaler or antibiotics. A clinician can assess whether allergy or airway treatment fits.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, chest pain, or a child who is struggling to breathe. Arrange review for a cough that is worsening, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, comes with fever or wheeze, or does not settle. Babies with poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or faster breathing should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether the cough pattern suggests infection, allergy, reflux, asthma, or another airway problem. Describe its duration, sound, mucus, triggers, night-time pattern, and any medicines or inhalers used.
