Itchy hands and feet during pregnancy: causes besides cholestasis

Pregnancy can make skin more reactive. Soaps, sanitiser, detergents, heat, and sweating may irritate the hands or feet. Small deep-seated blisters on the sides of fingers or soles can fit dyshidrotic eczema. Scaling between toes, cracking, or a moist appearance can point toward Athlete's Foot. A new product or footwear material may cause Contact Dermatitis. Dry skin can itch even when it looks only mildly changed. These patterns do not confirm a diagnosis, and itching without a visible rash should still be mentioned to a clinician.

Use lukewarm water, a fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick bland moisturiser after washing. Keep feet cool and dry, change damp socks, and choose breathable shoes. Avoid scratching; smooth nails and a cool compress can reduce skin injury. Do not start an oral or topical medicine in pregnancy without checking with your obstetric or dermatology team. Contact your maternity team promptly for new or severe itching, especially on the palms or soles, itching that keeps you awake, or itching without a rash. Seek urgent help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, marked abdominal pain, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.

Ask which pregnancy-safe moisturisers or medicines fit your symptoms, whether your skin pattern needs examination, and whether pregnancy-related liver checks are appropriate. Mention when the itching began, where it is strongest, whether it affects sleep, and every product or medicine used recently.
